US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was asked in an interview on Fox News who the White House would recognize as the legitimate president of Belarus.
According to him, the current Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko “swore himself in”, but this “makes no sense.”
At the same time, the head of the State Department avoided answering the question of whether Washington recognizes ex-candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya as the president of Belarus.
In addition, the official was asked about the measures that the American authorities intend to take “so as not to provoke the little green men,” that is, servicemen from Russia.
“We made it clear to the Russians, too, that such activities are not in anyone’s interests. It will not help the people of Russia, the people of Belarus, it will only make the situation more difficult for all countries in the region, ”Pompeo concluded.
