U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has gone into isolation after contact with a man sick with COVID-19. This was announced by a State Department spokesman.
“Secretary of State Pompeo has been identified as having come into contact with a person who tested positive for the coronavirus,” the State Department spokesman said. The diplomat himself tested negative but will remain quarantined under regulations from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The State Department declined to disclose the identity of the infected man for privacy reasons. Where and when Pompeo may have come into contact with a COVID-19 infected person has not been disclosed.
Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump claimed that his lawyer Rudy Giuliani had contracted the coronavirus. And in October, the American leader himself and his wife Melania contracted COVID-19. As of December 16, the number of people infected with the coronavirus is 16.7 million in the United States. Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 300,000 people have died of the disease in the country.
