An estimated 12.2 million American residents could fall into poverty if Congress does not expand the family assistance program. This was reported by the UtroNews correspondent with reference to experts from the Urban Institute.
The poverty rate could rise to 11.9% in the last 5 months of this year if unemployment benefits are not approved.
“Many families are preparing for difficult times and poverty as government support is dwindling,” the experts said.
In families where at least one person lost his job due to the crisis, an increase in poverty is predicted from August to December at 15.6%.
We will remind, on July 27, the Republicans announced a plan, the cost of which is 1 trillion dollars. It involves cutting weekly benefits in favor of direct payments to certain families.
