Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke to his U.S. counterpart Joseph Biden on the phone.
Putin congratulated Biden on the start of his tenure as president of the United States. He also noted that normalization of relations between Russia and the United States would be in the interests of both countries.
During their conversation, the presidents discussed current issues of bilateral and international agenda, such as the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START-3), the fight against coronavirus, and also considered the possibility of cooperation between the countries in the trade and economic sphere.
Putin and Biden also discussed the U.S. withdrawal from the Treaty on Open Skies, the preservation of the joint action plan on the Iranian nuclear program, the internal Ukrainian settlement, and the Russian initiative to hold a summit of the permanent members of the UN Security Council.
The Kremlin stressed that the conversation between the U.S. and Russian presidents was businesslike and frank, and it was agreed to maintain contacts.
