TSMC has planned production of 3-nanometer processors for 2021. Similar chips will be used in the iPhone 14, according to DigiTimes.

According to sources, TSMC is working on the development of processors of a lower nanometer level and is starting to build new production lines. It is expected that the first batch of chips built using the 3-nanometer process technology will be ready in 2021, their volume will be increased in 2022. 3-nanometer chips will be used in Apple smartphones planned for 2022, which are supposed to be called iPhone 14.

Judging by the disclosed data, the iPhone 12 lineup planned for the fall will be based on 5-nanometer A14 processors. Technical details about the new generation chips are not reported. Also, sources said that TSMC will transfer part of the production to Arizona (USA), the cost of building a new plant of the company is estimated at $ 12 billion. Presumably, new type A processor assembly workshops will open no earlier than 2024.

Smartphones of the current line of iPhone 11, released in the fall of 2019, use the A13 Bionic processor. The chip was developed by Apple and manufactured by TSMC using a 7-nanometer process technology. The A13 Bionic contains about 8.5 billion transistors and has an additional eight-core Neural Engine processor.

Earlier, Bloomberg sources said that Apple will abandon Intel processors in their computers, thereby ending a 15-year partnership with the company. The corporation intends to produce Mac computers with processors of its own production, expecting to increase their productivity and reduce costs. The announcement of a new series of devices is planned at WWDC, which starts on June 22.
