Ambassador for Special Assignments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Nikolai Korchunov explained why Russia is restoring military infrastructure in the Arctic.
According to him, such measures are necessary in order to ensure Russia’s defense capabilities in the Arctic, the press service writes.
“The military infrastructure in the Arctic was almost completely lost in the 1990s. Now the authorities of the country want to restore it, because the defense capability in the Arctic direction is of strategic importance for national security and the economy,” Korchunov told the publication.
He specified that over ten percent of the GDP and over twenty percent of the export of Russia are produced in the Arctic zone. In addition, representatives of the Russian Federation have repeatedly stated that the country’s military activity in the Arctic does not violate any international obligations and does not pose a threat to other states.
