Scientists predict the formation of a new ocean due to the split of Africa

Scientists have warned of the possible emergence of a new ocean.

According to the researchers’ calculations, after about five to ten million years, a tectonic fault will form in the eastern part of Africa, as a result of which the continent will “split” into two parts.

This stretch of the continent is located in the Afar region of Ethiopia. It is located at the junction of three tectonic plates that are slowly separating from each other. In 2005, a crack formed there, the length of which is now about 56 kilometers, scientists remind.

“This is the only place on Earth where you can study how the continental rift becomes oceanic,” said Christopher Moore, professor at the University of Leeds in the UK.

Scientists speculate that the phenomenon is caused by the increasing pressure from the rising magma. Now they monitor the movement of plates using GPS.
