Spain to grant amnesty to Catalan separatists

Spain’s prime minister announced an upcoming amnesty for Catalan politicians convicted of separatism.

An amnesty for nine Catalan separatist politicians will be signed tomorrow, June 22. This was announced by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Barcelona on June 21 at the conference “Reunification: a project of the future for the whole of Spain,” held at the Barcelona Opera House “Liceu de Barcelona”. The conference was attended by 300 people from the political, cultural, economic and sporting spheres of Catalonia.

The Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Spanish Supreme Court spoke out against the amnesty. The Supreme Court report stated that the precondition for amnesty is the repentance of the perpetrator, whereas in the case of Catalan politicians this is not the case.

On October 1, 2017, the government of Catalonia decided to hold a referendum on independence. The Constitutional Court declared it illegal.
