Special label: Facebook marks messages controlled by the media

Facebook will start tagging state-controlled media. Information about this is available on the company’s website. The leadership of the social network noted that Russia Today, Sputnik, Xinhua News and the Philippine News Agency are on the list of media that should have received the label on June 5th.

“We provide greater transparency for these publishers because they combine the influence of a media organization with the strategic support of the state, and we believe that people should know if the news they read comes from publications that may be influenced by the government,” commented in on his blog, the head of Facebook’s cybersecurity department, Nathan Gleicher.
Information that a particular media outlet is under the control of the authorities can be seen in the page information. The corresponding note will also be displayed on all posts from this account in the news feed.

“A few months ago, we announced our plan to mark the pages of media organizations that are fully or partially under the editorial control of the authorities of their countries, and from today we begin to mark such pages,” the company said in a statement.

As the Facebook administration pointed out, the following criteria will be used to determine whether the media page is under the influence of the authorities: editorial policy, ownership structure, mission description of the publication, information about employees and managers, sources of financing and income, as well as management and reporting mechanisms. In addition, some factors specific to a country will be taken into account, such as the level of media freedom.

The statement emphasizes that in case of disagreement the media organizations whose pages have been marked can appeal the decision of the social network administration, but they must present evidence of the independence of their editorial policy. In this case, Facebook will consult with independent experts to review the decision.

EADaily recalls, the Facebook administration said earlier that the social network also plans to begin labeling ads for government-controlled publications this year. It is explained that in the United States such advertising will be blocked in order to avoid potential foreign influence on the presidential election, which will be held in November 2020.
