The U.S. team reached the semifinals of the Ice Hockey World Championship in Riga. In the quarterfinals, the Americans defeated the Slovaks 6-1.
Colin Blackwell and Conor Garland scored twice each. Brian Boyle and Sasha Chmielewski scored once each. The only goal for the Slovaks was scored by Peter Ceglarik. The Americans advanced to the semifinals.
In the second quarterfinals the teams of Switzerland and Germany played. In the regulation time the game was a 2-2 draw, moreover the Swiss had won 2-0 after shots of Roman Unterzander and Fabrice Herzog. But Tom Künchakl and Leon Gavanke tied the game late in the second period. The extra period brought no success for either side. It came down to a shootout, which was better executed by the Germans. Team Germany advanced to the semifinals of the World Cup for the first time since 2010.
