Texas loosened restrictions on carrying guns

The state will not require gun owners to have a license or pass background checks.

The governor of Texas has signed a law allowing people to carry firearms without a permit and without a background check.

Greg Abbott is scheduled to emphasize the law at a ceremony Thursday.

The law, which takes effect Sept. 1, can be used by anyone without a felony conviction or other legal impediment to gun ownership.

Federal background checks for some gun buyers remain, and individual businesses can impose bans on carrying guns on their property.
