After a lull in the months before the election, federal authorities are now actively investigating Hunter Biden and his ties to China, according to insiders. His father, President-elect Joe Biden, is not involved.
Now that the election is over, the investigation is moving into a new phase. Federal prosecutors in Delaware, working with the IRS Criminal Investigation Agency and the FBI, are conducting new interviews and issuing subpoenas for those involved. In recent months, activity in the investigation has been covert because of Justice Department directives prohibiting overt actions that could affect the election.
“I first learned yesterday that the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Delaware informed my legal counsel that they were investigating my tax affairs. I take this matter very seriously, but I am confident that a professional and objective analysis of these matters will demonstrate that I have conducted my affairs lawfully and properly, including with the help of professional tax advisors,” Hunter Biden said in a statement.
According to another source, some of his operations in China involved people the FBI believes raise counterintelligence concerns, a common problem when dealing with Chinese businesses.
The investigation began back in 2018, before William Barr’s appointment as U.S. attorney general.
