The main rivals of the United States on the world stage are Russia and China, said Pentagon chief Mark Esper, speaking at the American think tank RAND, CNN reports.
According to him, Washington has fought against extremists in recent years and participated in “low intensity conflicts”, which distracted the country from more powerful opponents.
“The Defense Department identifies China and then Russia as our main strategic rivals,” Esper said.
The head of the Pentagon accused Moscow of “disrespect for international law.” In addition, he criticized Russia and the PRC for modernizing the armed forces.
Earlier, the deputy chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the US Armed Forces, John Haiten, said that the development of the Americans in the field of hypersonic weapons had failed. It will take the country several years to restore its leadership in this area.
