The Russian ambassador called the new U.S. sanctions destructive and baseless

Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov called Washington’s new sanctions destructive and baseless. His words were published on the embassy’s Facebook page.

Antonov said that this is “another unfriendly and destructive step by the [U.S.] administration aimed at deepening the crisis in bilateral relations.” According to him, with their actions the U.S. authorities are trying to distract public attention from serious systemic problems within the United States itself.

“Russia has repeatedly advocated abandoning illegitimate unilateral sanctions and returning to normal interstate relations,” the ambassador added.

On December 10, the U.S. synchronously with Britain imposed sanctions against Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov, companies associated with him and people from his entourage. The US Treasury Department expanded the so-called global list of the Magnitsky Act because of “violations of human rights. The sanctions included the Akhmat Kadyrov Foundation, the Akhmat soccer club and the mixed martial arts club of the same name, the promoter company Akhmat Absolute Championship, Chechen Mineral Waters and Megastroyinvest.
