Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya spoke about the conversation with the leader of the Belarusian opposition Svetlana Tikhanovskaya.
“We are ready to talk to everyone. There was such a “Arria formula” (informal meetings organized by members of the UN Security Council – approx. “Lenta.ru”), organized by Estonians. Yes, there was Tikhanovskaya. We talked, ”Nebenzya said. He noted that Moscow gives the floor to all parties, in contrast to Western countries.
Earlier, Nebenzya said that Russia may think about leaving the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) if it “will stamp decisions on undesirable regimes.” At the same time, at the moment Moscow is not going to make sudden movements and “does not advise others to do it.” As the most egregious example, Nebenzya cited accusations against the Syrian authorities of using chemical weapons.
The presidential elections in Belarus took place on August 9. The CEC announced that Alexander Lukashenko, who is running for a sixth term, received 80 percent of the vote, while the main opposition candidate, the wife of the arrested blogger, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, received 10 percent. This provoked massive protests throughout the country, with the first actions being particularly violently dispersed. Many detainees spoke of torture and abuse in the isolation wards.
