Every 11 years, the Sun completes the solar cycle of calm and violent activity and begins a new one. Experts say that our star is now entering a new phase.
A new solar cycle officially began in December 2019, according to the announcement by the International Forecasting Panel Solar Cycle 25. But it can take up to 10 months to accurately calculate when a new cycle will begin, as the Sun is so volatile. Only now experts were able to confirm the beginning of a new cycle, which will become the 25th in the history of astronomical observations.
Maximum solar activity, when the Sun reaches its peak, is expected in July 2025. Then solar flares or other coronal mass eruptions could even disrupt communications on Earth.
The 24th solar cycle was the fourth strongest cycle on record and the weakest cycle in 100 years, noted physicist Lisa Upton of Space Systems Research Corporation.
