The U.S. imposed sanctions against Minsk riot police and KGB special forces of Belarus

The U.S. Treasury Department has imposed new sanctions on an individual and four organizations from Belarus for “undermining democratic processes and institutions” in the country. The corresponding statement is posted on the website of the agency.

The sanctions list includes First Deputy Interior Minister of Belarus Gennady Kazakevich, the Central Commission of Belarus for Elections and National Referendums, Minsk police department, Minsk riot police unit and the KGB “Alpha.

On December 17th the European Union approved the third package of sanctions against Belarus in connection with “continuing repressions against civil society. The sanctions list included 29 new names and 7 companies. On December 18, Great Britain joined the new sanctions.

In response to the new restrictions, Belarus expanded its own sanctions list, prohibiting entry to a number of people from the European Union. In addition to the personal sanctions, the Belarusian government will restrict the activities of a number of political foundations, various humanitarian and educational programs, including those under the auspices of foreign embassies.
