The American magazine The National Interest says that the heavy flamethrower system TOS-1 Buratino is capable of “destroying enemy fortifications on relatively large territories in a short period of time.
The magazine calls this Russian weapon a deadly one. According to the magazine the TOS-1 Buratino is suitable “for a horror movie.
The paper notes that the high efficiency of such systems intended for use in confined spaces is explained by the use of explosive aerosol dispersal warheads.
The magazine notes that TOS-1 Buratino, based on the chassis of the T-72 tank, was introduced in the 1980s. The publication reminds that this weapon received unguided rockets in thermobaric and smoke-ignition shells, the maximum range of which is estimated at 3.5 kilometers.
The National Interest writes that in the 2000s TOS-1A Solntsekek appeared and its range reached six kilometers, and in 2020 TOS-2 Tosochka was demonstrated and featured greater automation.
The publication reminds that the TOS were used, for example, in conflicts in the Middle East.
Last November, Izvestia, citing sources in the Defense Ministry, reported that the TOS-1 Buratino and TOS-1A Solntepek systems would be upgraded. According to the newspaper, the modernization includes an increase of combat power, protection and firing range as well as connection to the “military Internet. In particular, the newspaper notes that the new long-range missiles will allow “burning out entire hectares at a distance of up to 15 kilometers.
