The WHO announced a scientific breakthrough in the treatment of coronavirus

World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhan Ghebreyesus announced a scientific breakthrough in the treatment of coronavirus. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.

Gebreyesus spoke about the results of clinical trials in the UK of a dexamethasone steroid for the treatment of infection. Scientists from Oxford found that the anti-inflammatory drug dexamethasone reduces the risk of death of infected people who are connected to ventilators by 35 percent, and among patients undergoing oxygen treatment, by 20 percent.

The drug has been approved by the British government. Dexamethasone was called the world’s first cure for coronavirus infection.

“This is great news, and I congratulate the British government, Oxford University and many hospitals and patients in the UK who have contributed to this scientific breakthrough that will save lives,” the WHO Director General said.

Earlier it was reported that the Russian Ministry of Defense, together with the Gamalei National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, began clinical trials of a Russian vaccine against a new coronavirus infection. The first group of volunteers will be given a new vaccine shortly after completion of a two-week isolation. The primary goal of the first test is to verify the safety and tolerability of vaccine components.
