Life may be common in the universe, but intellect is most likely a rare phenomenon, American scientists have come to the conclusion.
The Earth exists about 4.5 billion, the last third of the universe’s history. Thanks to the combination of geology and paleontology, we can trace the existence of life throughout the history of the planet, and the results show that life originated on Earth very early, during the first few hundred million years. But intelligent life is a very different story.
Organisms thrived, died and evolved for billions of years before humans – the first intelligent species. So how likely is intelligent life in the universe? New research determines that any kind of intelligent life in space is a phenomenon, says lead author Ethan Siegel.
