US President Donald Trump, in an interview with The Washington Post, called the topic of arms control the main one in current Russian-American relations. This statement came amid Washington’s refusal to renew the strategic offensive arms treaty (START-3).
“Nothing is more significant from what we can do than control over nuclear weapons,” the head of the White House said.
At the same time, Trump believes that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin have “actually very good relations” despite the introduction of an increasing number of anti-Russian sanctions.
On Friday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that the Americans would not renew the START-3 treaty, which expires in February 2021.
“Apparently, the decision not to renew this agreement in the United States has already been made. The persistence with which the non-alternative approach of transferring the entire conversation to the trilateral plane is emphasized suggests that this is already a foregone conclusion, ”Lavrov noted.
Recall, Washington insists on the need for China to join the arms control talks. Beijing, in turn, is ready to participate in tripartite talks only if it increases its nuclear potential to the level of the Americans or if they reduce theirs to the level of China.
