Trump decides to reduce US dependence on mineral imports

US President Donald Trump signed a decree on Wednesday aimed at reducing the country’s dependence on supplies from abroad of the most significant types of minerals, including rare earth metals. This information was disseminated by the White House.

With this document, Trump declared an emergency to eliminate the threat “posed by the excessive dependence of the United States on the supply of minerals.” The decree aims to develop the mining industry in the United States, support jobs, and reduce dependence on China in this matter.

Rare earth metals are in demand in high-tech industries. The absolute leader in their production is China, whose share in world production is about 70%. Since 2010, China has started to restrict exports. In the summer, US Attorney General William Barr said that dependence on Chinese supplies poses a threat to the country, as Beijing could impose export restrictions.
