President Donald Trump has promised to reduce the number of US troops in Germany to 25 thousand.
“As you know, Germany has overdue its payments to NATO,” said the head of the White House.
The American president wondered why Washington should help Berlin if the German authorities were not going to pay.
“Why does Germany pay Russia billions of dollars for energy, and the US should protect them from Russia? That’s not good,” the president added.
The head of the White House once again called Berlin a “deadbeat” because, Trump emphasized, Germany should contribute “billions of dollars” to the NATO budget for defense.
As Spiegel wrote earlier, the decision of the American leader took the German government by surprise: Washington did not inform Berlin in advance about this.
In turn, today, Foreign Minister Heiko Maas called the reduction in the US contingent unsurprising. The diplomat also described the relations between the two countries as complex.
