US President Donald Trump ordered by 2030 to create icebreakers in the Arctic and Antarctica in order to protect American interests

This was reported by the press service of the White House.

“To help protect our national interests in the Arctic and Antarctic regions and maintain a strong presence of our security forces in the Arctic, along with allies and partners, the United States needs a fleet of trained, efficient and affordable icebreakers that will be tested and fully ready for deployment by fiscal year 2029 “- said Trump.

At this stage, the administration should prepare a review of the benefits and costs of maintaining the icebreaker fleet. We are talking about at least three heavy icebreakers. After that, the documents will be passed for evaluation to the president.

After that, it is planned to study the prospects of using middle-class icebreakers for missions to ensure national and economic security in the Arctic. This aspect also includes the extraction of resources and the laying of submarine cables. Next, they will compare the results with the possible use of heavy icebreakers for similar purposes. As a result, the optimal composition of the icebreaker groups will be determined, which can guarantee a permanent US presence in the Arctic and Antarctica.

Trump also ordered that at least two US and two international sites be identified where icebreakers can be moored.

One of the options for installing icebreakers is to rent them from the United States or other countries.

At the same time, the lease is provided for the short and medium term in 2022-2029, as the Polar Star type icebreaker is decommissioned.

To date, the US coast guard has at its disposal the heavy icebreaker Polar Star and medium Healy.
