President Donald Trump tweeted on Sunday that he ordered the National Guard to begin the process of withdrawing troops from Washington, DC, after several days of mass protests.
“They will go home, but can return quickly if necessary. Last night, there were far fewer protesters in the city than anticipated, ”Trump wrote.
Approximately 5,000 National Guard troops were called in to patrol the country’s capital – 3,900 National Guard troops from 11 states and 1,200 Guard troops from the District of Columbia base. They participated in security protests after the police assassination of George Floyd.
The plan for the withdrawal of guard forces outside the state has been drawn up over the past 48 hours, since all demonstrations of the last day are peaceful.
