Two Canadian citizens will go on trial in China for espionage

The People’s Supreme Prosecutor’s Office formally charged espionage to two Canadians.

According to the PRC investigating authorities, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spayvor engaged in illegal activities in the Celestial Empire, that is, espionage, in favor of a foreign state. They managed to obtain information representing state secrets. In mid-May, Canadian citizens were detained and arrested. All this time, the suspects were kept in the pre-trial detention center. No other details were reported by the Chinese investigating authorities.

Experts believe that the arrest of two Canadian citizens could be a retaliatory measure for the detention of Huawei financial director Meng Wanzhou at the end of 2018 at the Vancouver airport.
