Two police officers commit suicide after Capitol riot

Two policemen who took part in the dispersal of the crowd which stormed the Capitol, have committed suicide. This was announced by the acting head of the Washington police Robert Conti, testifying before the U.S. House of Representatives.

According to Conti, the dead were officers Jeffrey Smith and Howard Liebengood of the Washington and Capitol Police. He recalled that another police officer, Brian Siknick, died from injuries sustained during the riots.

“We honor the service and sacrifices of officers Brian Siknick, Howard Liebengood and Jeffrey Smith and extend our condolences to all the grieving families,” Conti said. He added that 65 other police officers were injured.

On Jan. 6, Trump supporters protested the election results and stormed the Capitol building and surrounded the Senate chamber. The Senate and House of Representatives interrupted a session scheduled to approve the results of the past election. Dozens of people were detained and five people were killed.
