The U.S. military spotted two Russian Tu-142s in the Alaska Air Defense Identification Area.
The incident occurred at approximately 19:00 North American Eastern Time (03:00 Moscow time). “NORAD’s Alaska Command has identified and tracked two Russian Tu-142 maritime patrol aircraft that entered the Alaska Air Defense Identification Area,” the command said in a statement.
It is noted that the Russian planes remained in international airspace and did not violate the U.S.-Canadian air border.
On August 31, 2020, Mike Pompeo, then secretary of state, said the U.S. had noticed an increase in Russian military activity near Alaska and other regions.
