U.S. pressure is preventing Iraq from making deals with China

United States pressure has prevented Iraq from fulfilling its agreements with China, Iraqi MP Mohammed al-Baldavi said Saturday.

In his view, the agreements concluded between Baghdad and Beijing will help Iraq reach “a higher level” and improve its economy. For example, if Iraq fulfills its agreement with China to build a large port “Al-Fau” in the southern province of Basra, the country will become a strategic bridge between Asia and Europe.

However, as the deputy said, despite Iraq’s readiness to make deals, Baghdad is under pressure from the United States.

On September 9, 2019, former Iraqi Prime Minister Adil Abdul-Mahdi, who led a high-ranking Iraqi delegation to China, signed a number of economic cooperation agreements with Beijing.
