The new U.S. Space Command plans to move its headquarters from a temporary location in Colorado to Alabama in 2023.
The command has chosen Huntsville, Alabama, as the preferred location for its permanent headquarters. Space Command, a unit of the U.S. Air Force, is temporarily based in Colorado, but it has conducted virtual and on-site visits to six potential locations for the nation’s newest military unit.
Redstone Arsenal, an Army facility in Huntsville, received approval. Space Command evaluated the potential sites based on factors related to mission, infrastructure, community support and cost, according to an Air Force press release. Redstone Arsenal provides a large skilled workforce, quality schools and excellent infrastructure. In addition, the Army installation can give a free facility until a permanent structure is built.
As a reminder, members of the space force will be referred to as “keepers.”
