US President Donald Trump has ordered the development of an icebreaker construction program for the Arctic and Antarctic.
According to RIA Novosti, this is stated in the memorandum of the head of state, sent to members of his administration.
“The United States will develop and implement an icebreaker procurement program (to ensure) polar safety that will support our national interests in the Arctic and Antarctic,” the memorandum says.
Trump instructed the Secretary of Homeland Security, in coordination with the US Coast Guard commandant, Pentagon chief and Secretary of Energy, to study the comparative operational and financial benefits and risks of a polar icebreaker fleet consisting of “at least three heavy class icebreakers (PSC)”.
In addition, it is planned to build middle-class icebreakers, but their number is not specified.
