US says Hong Kong takeover could end with sanctions for China

Beijing’s preparation of new laws in Hong Kong could lead to US sanctions, said US National Security Advisor Robert O’Brien in an interview with NBC.

O’Brien also recalled that the Communist Party of China in 1984, at the time of signing the joint declaration, promised Great Britain to maintain Hong Kong’s autonomy and its lifestyle until 2047.

Recall that the discussion of the bill on national security in Hong Kong began on May 22 at a session of the All-China Assembly of People’s Representatives (NPC). The head of the Hong Kong administration, Carrie Lam, said that she supported the consideration of the document and believed that it would not affect the rights and freedom of Hong Kong residents.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that any Beijing decision regarding Hong Kong’s freedom will entail Washington’s revision of the “one country, two systems” system.

He also noted that the discussion of the bill at the NPC is ignoring the will of the people, and also bypassing Hong Kong’s legislative procedures.
