Convicted of espionage, American Paul Whelan can be exchanged for Russian prisoners in US prisons in August or September. The possible terms of release became known from his lawyer, Vladimir Zherebenkov.
“We don’t know how the negotiations go: they are not engaged in by lawyers, but by politicians or special services. Usually, this [exchange] procedure takes two to three months, ”the lawyer said. He added that Whelan is now in the Moscow pre-trial detention center “Lefortovo”, while he is not being transferred to the colony, despite the sentence that has come into force.
On June 15, the Moscow City Court sentenced US citizen Paul Whelan to 16 years in a maximum security colony, convicting him of espionage. Vladimir Zherebenkov on the same day spoke about the possibility of exchange for Konstantin Yaroshenko or Viktor Bout, imprisoned in American prisons. The Russian Foreign Ministry denies these claims.
