German Chancellor Angela Merkel condemned the impending US sanctions on Nord Stream 2.
She promised to complete and commission the gas pipeline. German officials warn that Washington’s direct intervention in the energy interests of a bloc of 27 states could trigger a collective response at European Union level. The head of the Bundestag committee on energy, Klaus Ernst, proposed introducing fines on US LNG and personal sanctions against senators, the authors of new sanctions. “I am glad that our German colleagues are looking towards constructive solutions and improving the lives of their citizens,” said Igor Ananskikh, 1st Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on Energy. “The implementation of this project will primarily allow German residents and companies to reduce the burden on utilities and production costs.”
