Young Americans Have Less Sex Than Ever

About one in three Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 had no sexual activity during the year between 2000 and 2018. The analysis showed that young US citizens are less likely to have sex.

According to one of the authors of the study, the main reason for this decline is that adolescents need more time to go into adulthood. According to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, two years before the pandemic, sexual activity of young Americans fell to a record low.

“Sexual activity is increasing among men and women only between the ages of 25 and 34, with an increase among men mainly occurring among unmarried people,” the authors say. Experts from the University of San Diego note that adolescents and young people today are more financially dependent on their parents, making it harder for them to meet someone and have sex.

“Currently, there are much more options than one could do late in the evening than ever – and less sexual activity if both partners are absorbed in social networks, electronic games or other secluded activities. At the same time, young people still remain under the control of their parents, as they later get on their feet due to long maturation and financial problems. An increase in anxiety and depression among young people is also having an effect, ”the researchers say.
